Climbing with an American Mountain Guides Association accredited climbing guide service ensures that your guide is AMGA certified and will uphold the highest professional standard for a safer and better experience. Our friendly and talented guides will guarantee that you have a great day of climbing at Smith Rock and receive the rock climbing instruction you need to improve your skills.

Chockstone guide services maintain a 5:1 client to guide ratio. All are welcome, regardless of age, ability, skill level, or experience level.  Rates are per person for a half day or full day trip. Half days are 4 hours long. Full day trips have no time constraints, but generally are between 6-8 hours.  Number of people in group / price each:

Directions

Located just 3 miles east of highway 97 in the town of Terrebonne, Oregon. A brown Smith Rock State Park sign and a yellow traffic light mark the turn east onto Smith Rock Way. After turning east, the route is easy to follow: there are small signs for every turn to lead you to the Smith rock climbing area.

A $5 day use parking permit or a current state park camp receipt available from the self service pay stations.

  • An Oregon State Parks Annual pass is $30, two-year pass is $50, and both are available at the Welcome Center and online.
  • Day-use visitor hours are from dawn to dusk.
  • Dogs are allowed, on a leash at all times.
  • Bring water bottles. There is water in back of the visitors center and at the bridge to fill water bottles.
  • The park is open year-round

Other nearby options: Mountain Supply and REI are located in Bend.

Local Eats

There's no shortage of local food spots to discover after your trip. There are three restaurants in Terrebonne; Terrebonne Depot, Pump House Grill, and Basecamp Pizza. We recommend the climber owned Depot. There are also many great restaurants and breweries to choose from in Redmond, only 15 minutes away.

The Redpoint Climbers Supply is not only a great gear shop but is the best place for coffee, local beer, cider selection on tap, and community connection.

For groceries, there is a full supermarket and deli in Terrebonne – Oliver Lemon.

Camping

Smith Rock State Park has a campground called The Bivy. Space is available on a first-come first-served basis. There is a central cooking area and a walk-in tent set up area. There's also running water and a charging station. Reservations are not accepted. Fees are $8.00 per person per night, and include the parking permit for the next day and use of the showers. No RV's over 20ft. are allowed and no overnight sleeping in vehicles, trailers or campers is allowed.

The next closest camping is Skull Hollow
Grasslands National Monument Skull Hollow Campground, a 10 minute drive east of Smith Rock. This campground has individual campsites, unlike the bivouac area. $8.00 per site. No running water or RV hook-ups, but campfires are allowed and camping in vehicle is permitted.

There are more vacation rentals in the area within driving-distance.

There are no hotels in Terrebonne.  Redmond has several 2.5 and 3 star hotels. SCP Hotel Redmond is a nicely renovated downtown historic hotel with a rooftop bar 15 min drive to Smith Rock.

Bend and Sisters 30 to 45 minute drive to Smith Rock both have a full range of hotels, depending on the experience you are looking for.

Meet Up Location
+

You will meet your Chockstone guide at Smith Rock State Park. Smith Rock State Park is a small enough park to coordinate with your guide your exact meet up spot. It is also big enough that one meet up spot does not fit all. Your guide will check in with you before hand so you understand your exact meeting location.

Guide Contact

Your guide will contact you by cell phone the evening prior to your climbing date to go over details; confirm meet up location and time, review your climbing goals, get gear needs or any information specific to your trip.

Entrance Fee
+

A $5.00 parking pass is required and can be bought at one of the self pay kiosks. The kiosk accepts cash and credit cards. An annual Oregon State Park pass works as well.

What to Bring
+
  • Bring water (2 liters minimum each person for hot summer days). Water bottles can be filled at the parking area of Smith Rock State Park.
  • A hearty sack lunch and packable snacks
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, and perhaps a sun hat.
  • A backpack; large enough to include, water, lunch, snacks, as well as personal climbing gear (shoes, harness, helmet). If you do not have a suitable backpack, we can provide one. Let your guide know ahead of time.
  • Extra clothing in case of colder weather.
What to Wear

  • Dress for the season and forecasted weather. Wear clothing appropriate for being active outdoors.
  • Shorts, tights, loose fitting pants, or sweatpants are appropriate.
    It’s always good to have an extra long sleeve layer even in the summer, the shade in the mornings can be cool.
  • Outdoor footwear comfortable for hiking and scrambling such as hiking shoes or tennis shoes. Open toed shoes, sandals and flip flops are not recommended!

Tipping

Many clients ask us if it is appropriate to tip their guide. Tipping is customary. As you will see your guide will be working very hard to meet your goals and take great care to assure you a fun, memorable climbing experience. If you feel they did a good job, please feel free to tip your guide what feels appropriate to your experience.

Payment
+

A valid credit card is required to hold your reservation for a private guided day trip; no charge is made at this time. Full payment is due upon the day of your trip. If you sign up for a trip that starts within 3 days, full payment is due at that time. We accept checks, money orders, and Visa / MasterCard / American Express / Discover.

Is a deposit required? Our private guided trips do not require a deposit. Our camps, courses, and groups over 10 require a 50% payment to hold a reservation.

Cancellations and Refunds

If you cancel for any reason, prior to 3 days before your trip at Smith Rocks, we will happily reschedule for another date or consider cancellation without penalty. If cancellation is made within 3 days a 50% of the total will be charged. Groups, camps, courses will forfeit their total deposit for cancellation within 1 wk of the start date.

Cancellation for any significant medical or other emergency circumstances at any time may be considered for a full or partial refund. Please contact us to discuss options.

Weather Policy

Cancellation/reschedule due to rain or snow on day of trip is without penalty. However, once a trip begins, if the activities are cut short due to weather, there is no refund available. If weather is questionable you can plan to have a phone conversation as late as the day of, in the morning to make the final decision with your guide. Medical Considerations

If you have had a recent injury, illness, or surgery, or if you have a medical condition such as asthma or allergies to food or medications, you should consult with us as well as your physician before signing up for any trip.

Personal Responsibility

We make every effort to provide you with a safe and successful climb. Climbing involves some inherent risks that are beyond our control. You will assume the responsibility for many decisions affecting the safety of your trip. We do not assume liability for injuries or death. All participants are completely responsible for all medical and hospital costs associated with any injury, rescue or evacuation. You must sign a release form and go at your own risk. We recommend for everyone to consider purchasing travel insurance for all vacation travel.

Do I Sign a Waiver?

All participants are required to complete and sign a Program Registration Form and an Acknowledgment of Risk and Release of Liability Form before we begin each trip. These can be requested by email prior or they can be filled out on arrival on the day of your trip.
